How To Reward Your Staff (Without Paying Them More)

Biggest learning, gift and reward the people you wish to really motivate according to the things they have told you that they value most. Small and big rewards can sometimes mean as much as each other, and if you don’t know someone’s favourite chocolates, sweets or indeed their fave holiday destination, find out? Too often management decides what the reward is and do not link it closely enough to the actions, targets and achievements that they want an individual to perform to. Too often they dictate what they THINK the team might like. This is often not what the team or an individual really wants?

Here are some of my tips on how you can reward your staff:

  1. Celebrate success at every opportunity
  2. ….And mistakes – share, learn, move on, no witch-hunts
  3. Stop fannying about, be organised
  4. Use consultants – with care
  5. Empower employees
  6. Include and encourage your staff to be involved in Board Meetings
  7. Promote a social life
  8. Get rid of “Them and Us” – break down the barriers, Team counts
  9. Offer choices
  10. Reward with what will excite/motivate them
  11. Competition is healthy
  12. Let them work when they want to – be flexible
  13. Keep it simple – cut the cr*p!
  14. Set standards – do unto others
  15. Offer the unexpected – go the extra mile
  16. Make them winners – praise and encourage
  17. Show people the level of your appreciation, cash rewards are not everything

  19. Birthdays are holidays
  20. Offer people security through great communication and open performance reporting
